Event: AIOTI discusses IoT at the European Parliament
In April, AIOTI’s Thomas Walloschke also spoke at the European Internet Forum (EIF) event, The Impact of Internet of Things on European Industries.
With its high-quality manufacturing industry, Europe can and should be the world leader in incorporating digitalization into product design, production processes, management and administration, logistics and other operations. Indeed, Digitising European Industry is a key EU initiative. At this lunchtime debate, hosted at the European Parliament, EIF members heard expert views on the successes and challenges the EU faces in bringing digitalization to Europe’s traditional manufacturing industries, and in particular SMEs.
Other speakers included:
- Pilar del Castillo MEP and EIF Chair
- Pearse O’Donohue, Director for the Future Networks Directorate, DG CONNECT, European Commission
- Justin Hobbs, Senior Director for EMEA Technical Solutions, Zebra Technologies (2017 Manufacturing vision study)

Coming up: ‘Nuances of Trust’ Workshop, London 14-15 May 2018
“Building trust is bigger than tactics – it’s your entire mission”
Following the success of AIOTI’s Strategy event last year, Nuances of Trust aims to be the AIOTI flagship event for 2018, bringing all members together in London. Register here
Wearables – Smart Cities – Critical Infrastructures – Farming – Living
“Our members have identified trust as a key ingredient for the successful take-up of IoT innovation,” says Kees van der Klauw, AIOTI chair. “If there is no trust, end users may simply refuse to adopt IoT technologies and applications. But trust is not only determined by superior technology or great applications. Trust in IoT remains a fuzzy concept, often narrowed down to security and privacy; how can we build trust with stakeholders, and on what will this trust be based?” Following our strategic ambitions, AIOTI is taking concrete steps to:
- Define a vision of trust
- Design an action roadmap to build certified trust in IoT ecosystems
Please reserve your place at the workshop before 7th May 2018
Expected outcome: the results of this collaborative workshop will be consolidated into an AIOTI paper and presented to a wider audience during IoT Week 2018 in Bilbao.
INVITATION
We invite you to help define concrete steps and measures to enable trusted relations between IoT stakeholders across five focus areas: Wearables, Smart Cities, Critical Infrastructures, Farming and Living. We will use creative and collaborative techniques to:
- Identify of critical moments of trust, in upstream and downstream value chains
- Develop ideas for trust-building solutions, such as technical concepts, standards, policy measures or codes of conduct
- Cluster and consolidate ideas that can be put forward the broader AIOTI channels, including policy recommendations, inputs to the Research & Innovation agenda and industrial practice guidelines

New Webinar: Developing IoT enabled smart cities
Why commercially viable cross-domain use cases will drive innovation and horizontalization of IoT enabled smart cities
This webinar takes place at 10:30 CEST on 24th May 2018 – register now
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email with details on how to join the webinar.
Speakers: Martin Brynskov, OASC chair OASC; Omar Elloumi, Nokia and AIOTI; and Keith Dickerson, Climate Associates and AIOTI
Sponsors: OASC (Open and Agile Smart Cities) and AIOTI
Description: commercially viable cross-domain use cases will be essential to the sustainable development of IoT-enabled smart cities. The journey towards achieving the vision of fully integrated smart cities will be incremental. We are reaching a point where commercially viable and/or economically sustainable cross-domain and cross-application use cases are emerging and entering the mainstream. These use cases will continue to gain in commercial viability and sustainability if they are designed with a horizontal approach in mind. They will help us to achieve integration at all layers, which will be key to master the total cost of ownership. This webinar will address:
- Assessment of the progress made and lessons learned from ongoing deployments and pilots
- Case studies of the most commercially viable or economically sustainable cross-application use cases
- Next steps and link to ongoing pilots and association activities
Smart cities will profit from replication and experience sharing; a call to action will be issued to provide feedback and support ongoing developments in relevant association initiatives. |

WORKING GROUP UPDATES
Digital innovation hubs for Agriculture
WG06 has published a white paper on Digital Innovation Hubs (DIH) for agriculture. Agriculture DIHs are instruments conceived to support businesses, notably SMEs, farmers, agri-cooperatives and non-tech industries in their digital transformation. Indeed, DIHs have the potential to play an important role in the democratization of IoT and digital technologies in the European agri-food domain, but they will require significant investments from the regions and EU Member States, and strong co-ordination efforts to maximize their positive impact. One of the points that is essential to the rollout and long-term success of agriculture DIHs is the definition of a proper business model (combining both public and private funding) that is both convenient to DIH beneficiaries and well suited to the catalogue of services offered by the DIH.
The purpose of conducting this survey is to gain more insight on this topic direct from (potential) beneficiaries and promoters of agri-DIH initiatives in Europe. The insights and recommendations learnt will be published and also forwarded to European Commission departments in charge of promoting and defining EU support to DIHs. No individual answers will be published, only aggregated and anonymized results. |
